12 Volt Electric Car
The Electric Car is quite a revolution of the millennium auto technology and also global the auto industry in general. It is also popularly known by its abbreviated name, ?EV?. The principle behind an electric car is that, its motors and motor controllers run through electricity, instead of fuel run internal combustion engines (ICE) / motors.
The main problem of the gasoline-run (petrol, diesel etc.) cars is all about the pollution they create to the atmosphere. Secondly under the current global economic point of view, it is more the question of saving fuel as well as money. Statistically speaking, about 78% of car users run on an average of 40 miles everyday to and fro their work places. Looking at this figure, it is but quite logical to look for other means of fuelling cars apart from the good old gasoline just to save for it.
There are models of cars that run both on the Internal Combustion Engines as well as electricity. These are popularly called as the hybrid model cars. All said and done, this new range of Electric Cars seems to be the future of auto-revolution of tomorrow.
The Prius brand of cars from Toyota is one such hybrid cars that have already entered the top 10 list of cars sold in the US this season. The car runs on electricity at lower speeds. However at higher speeds when there is a need for more power, the combustion engine switches over.
The big talk however is about an ?all-electric? car with the Electric roadster from Tesla motors. The car is said to have a capability of running from 0 to 60 within 4 seconds. The car just needs to be charged overnight to run approximately 200 miles the next day.
The main aspect about either the ?hybrids? or the ?all-electric? cars is that quite a number of them run on a total of 120 Volt battery. Here ten 12 Volt batteries are wired together to build a single 120 Volt battery for the electric car.
With a brand name of Orbital Deep Cycle battery, these are built based in the range of batteries from Exide Technologies; they are one of the first of the kind. Each battery within the single battery weighs around 41 pounds, weighing a total of 410 pounds per battery. Their capacity is said to be a total of 6,000 watt-hours, with approximately 50 amp/hour of electricity generated.
These batteries are designed for light-weight cars and have the capacity to give a distance of 50 miles per charge. The set also has enough space for additional batteries if more power is required. It is also claimed that these batteries are maintenance-free and can be mounted on any platform and also fitted in any position.
